Pictures from Flåm Trip

Serene Lake
This trip was amazing. A scenic train ride in Norway I went on a few years ago. Bergen Bana -> Flåmsbana.
Myrdal to Flåm is a 20 kilometer line and one of the steepest railway rides in the world. At the end is the beautiful Flåm Valley and Aurlandsfjord.

This train took us on a ride of a lifetime. The climb was so steep at times that it could only go 5mph, right by the cliffside.

A gif/timelapse from a programme (not my footage)

Inside the cabin.

Norwegians have a thing for maintaining and using stuff for a very long time.
Flåmsbana was originally a steam locomotive. Upgraded to EL9 electric locomotive in 1949, and after 35 years of faithful service, this electric BM 69 multiple unit was introduced in 1984.

Tunneling through the mountain.

A total of 20 tunnels were built, and a climb of 866 meters, to get across the Flåm valley. A major feat of enginneering for a railway project that began in 1904.

A spot with some nice scenery when the train has begun climbing the mountainside.

There's a popular cycling/hiking trip along Rallar Road. The train stops a few times to let hikers pass.

Some panoramic waterfalls.

A stop at a station. Finse

Some old memorabilia at the train station.

A river carving.

A trail going over the hill and down to the fjords on the other side. Maybe a nice hike.

Flåmdalen

The fjord

Sognefjord is the world's largest fjord and Aurlandsfjord is one of many branches that formed the valleys like Flåm Valley.

Flåmbana has been recognized as one of the most beautiful train rides in the world, and I can see why. And I'm not sure why it took me almost 30 years to finally see it for myself. I always recommend this trip to anyone coming to Norway.

Most of the pictures were taken with Motorola Droid (yes the first Droid:), and some with Panasonic DMC-LZ8.  If you have trouble viewing the full size of the pictures - try this Album.
